The June mission is Family Promise, a cooperative of many faith communities working toward providing intermediate care to homeless families as they make their way through a program of education, job training, life skills preparation, and a housing search.  This program is found in 39 states, with 4500 partnering congregations.  A majority of these families become homeless because of eviction, health problems leading to job disruption, or family disruption, such as divorce, abandonment, or domestic violence.  Given the choice of buying food or paying the high housing costs encountered in Warren County, most families choose food, leading to eviction and foreclosure.  Many of the parents have low wage jobs without benefits, and any unforeseen problem such as illness can lead to homelessness.  Prescreening of families is done prior to admission to the program to qualify need.

Besides our offering, which can help to defray expenses for so many items needed to operate the program in Warren County, there is another way we can help.  Family Promise will hold it’s annual Run4Home 5K and Kid’s Fun Run on July 4th at Armco Park.  Proceeds will support  Family Promise programs. One of these is Christmas in July, to help children who have been in the Family Promise program feel ready for school, as well as continued updates on the new campus.  See the Family Promise website for further information and/or to sign up.  The website also gives information on future events, such as Tailgate for Home (10/18).
